Discover the Hotel & Wellness Center shaping future – By P. Reeti
Tropea is a beautiful seaside town in Calabria. First from 2002 to 2005 and then in 2023 it obtained 5 Bandiere Blu (blue flags) on the Guida Blu (Blu Guide), from Lega Ambiente and Italian Touring Club.
In 2021 it won the national Borgo dei Borghi contest with the title of: Più bello d’Italia (most beautiful of Italy). From 2020 to 2024 it obtained the Blue Flag, that is, the recognition to coastal locations for the quality of bathing waters and sustainable management of the territory, thus being included in the prestigious list of the Foundation for Environmental Education. The Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea, as it is also called, stands out for its clear waters, beautiful beaches, characteristic historic center and genuine and delicious food. It is a small paradise that rises on the Costa degli Dei (Coast of the Gods) and the Tropis, which overlooks it, is its Olympus.
The Tropis is a modern and elegant 4-star hotel with wellness center, featuring 115 rooms with balcony, sea side or mountain side, AC, Wi-Fi, Spa, gym, meeting room, banquet room, swimming pool and oter services. The Tropis Hotel & Wellness Center is more than an accommodation facility. In fact it actively supports the community through various projects and by hosting, important events that take place in the area. Also noteworthy is the support it gives to local youth, honoring a courageous and innovative family member.
The Tropis Hotel & Wellness Center belongs to the Mamone family. It is the realization of a dream of the entrepreneur Antonio Mamone, who passed away prematurely in 2018.
Antonio Mamone had a good heart and a courageous and unconventional mentality. He cared a lot about improving the territory and always moved in favor of the community. Today his sisters, who take care of the hotel, follow the same direction as their beloved deceased brother. Antonio above all, gave value to investing in the young generations so much so that, after his university studies in Pisa, he returned to Tropea to invest in his hometown and in its children.
Antonio’s sisters, Domenica and Francesca, in addition to running the family business, have established a substantial scholarship for young Calabrian students, now in its sixth edition and presented by the association La Sterlizia which awarded the prize to the young winning students. The award ceremony was held at the Tropis Hotel & Wellness Center on July 29th with the participation of personalities from the local social and political world, as well as local and regional media.
Offering opportunities to talented students
The scholarship Costruisco il Mio Futuro (I Build My Future) in Memory of Antonio Mamone consists of 15,000 euros for six students of the Tropea Higher Education Institute. The Mamone sisters follow every step of the scholarship to ensure that the funds are actually invested by the winners in classes, courses and updates. In a period in which Italy is forced to deal with the phenomenon of youth emigration, this family firmly believes that supporting students is the way to build their future. Infact, since 2019, every year they work tirelessly to give a chance to the future by fighting against the “brain drain”.
The award ceremony is always an emotional event both for the commemoration of the Calabrian entrepreneur and for the opportunity given to the new generations. It is not a fancy party or a social event but a meeting made up of human beings full of hope who step by step build something good for the coming times. Ugo Mazza, director of the hotel since 2011, supervises the preparations for the ceremony, with the support of an open and motivated staff and the willingness to intervene where necessary.
He promptly and successfully manages the needs of the attendees of the awards ceremony and those of the hotel guests. He is able to succeed, as he says, thanks to the strong team spirit he has established among the staff and, above all, by putting himself on the front line. The preparation of the awards ceremony is a challenge that is renewed and that is faced each time with new emotion and energy. Mazza has been alongside the Mamone sisters for 13 years.
Working surrounded by women, in times and places like Southern Italy, for many could require a change of mentality and, probably, a consequence of the difficulty of knowing how to read and interpret the vast female universe. But at Tropis you breathe harmony and you wonder what the ace up the sleeve of the director is.
“I’ve never noticed anything different. Whether I work with men or women, nothing changes. It’s always a calm and collaborative team game.” Mazza says.
The scholarship program is managed by Domenica and Franceca Mamone. The older sister, Domenica, had already worked with her brother Antonio in the old hotel and continues his legacy. About the scholarship, she takes care of public relations with students, families, schools, guests and collaborators. Francesca takes care of the administrative part, such as calling suppliers or making estimates. But she also takes care of logistics and details. She does everything very meticulously. According to her, being attentive and self-critical serves as a means of improvement. In fact, every year the final event of the scholarship evolves by making improvements.
“If you think you’ve done well, you never surpass yourself and therefore you never improve. If we know we can do better in terms of organization as in terms of hospitality, we push ourselves forward to improve. Many things create harmony if taken care of in detail. This year too, the event was a success, first of all because of the strong team spirit of collaboration and then because more space is given to young people. And this must be said.” Francesca Mamone says.
Precisely to continue the improvement and well-being of the community and to give space to the young people of the area, the Tropis Hotel & Wellness Center is a supporter of other cultural initiatives such as, among many, Culture a Confronto Festival organized by Andrea Addolorato, Teatro d’aMare Festival by LaboArt, the initiatives of the Libertas association, in Tropea, Literary award by the Unitre association, chaired by Vittoria Saccà; and, lately, the multi-art event Mediterranean Cocktail of Art II edition. We are indeed pleased to announce that the Tropis Hotel & Wellness Center has joined the sponsorship of Mediterranean Cocktail of Art II edition. Once again in favor of the territory, the Tropis Hotel & Wellness Center will be part of our initiative by participating in the event featuring Calabrian artists, to give them visibility abroad.
If you also want to support the talents of the splendid Calabria and give them worldwide visibility, become a sponsor of our upcoming event!
