Journalists, activists, magistrates and institutional figures can defend themselves from advanced espionage, thanks to new-generation tools that leverage Artificial Intelligence, capable of detecting government-level Trojans in cell phones, such as Graphite, Predator and Pegasus.
San Marino, February 20th, 2025 – After the recent scandals of wiretapping of Italian journalists and activists, with the Graphite spy software by Paragon it has emerged that espionage on smartphones is more widespread than ever, both by government and private agencies, the latter often operating in unclear contexts.
Journalists, activists, magistrates and figures sensitive to external attacks can, however, defend themselves from the most advanced espionage, implemented by malicious individuals, eager to steal private information for dossier activities.
How to defend yourself from wiretaps
What has not emerged from the various journalistic reports is that it is possible to defend yourself from this type of cyber attack.
This is possible because there are sophisticated defense software, which are able to understand and alert the user if he is being spied on.
“The best tool, recently released on the market, is the MSAT – Mobile Security Analysis Toolkit – a set of tools dedicated to detecting spying on mobile phones. The MSAT tools allow you to detect active spying operations on smartphones, even if they are performed with sophisticated Trojans such as Graphite/Paragon, the software in the recent scandal that spied on Italian journalists and activists, or such as Predator/Intellexa and Pegasus/NSO“, explains Luigi Camporesi, security expert and founder of Intercettazioni.biz, which has been active for twenty years in the security and intelligence support systems sectors.
How the MSAT Defense System Works, to Defend Against Espionage
MSAT is composed of three parts: MDP – an Artificial Intelligence Host Based Intrusion Detection System, SIDER – a Network Node Intrusion Detection System and Check Lists.
MDP detects the presence of even the most sophisticated Trojans by using Machine Learning, a form of Artificial Intelligence. Through behavioral analysis of the smartphone, such as monitoring Kernel activity, MDP is able to detect and report the presence of Trojans and other compromises.
Given its effectiveness, MDP was chosen, for example, to protect over 150,000 devices of officials of the DoD – the US Department of Defense.
SIDER captures the destination IP addresses of data stolen from cell phones, when they are sent to Command and Control servers, displays on a graphical interface the ambient audio capture operations when they occur in real time, automatically detects commercial Spyware and reports various Indicators of Compromise.
The Check Lists instead support the search for compromises of social accounts, email accounts, smartphone login and backup credentials, etc., security violations detectable only with visual inspection.
The three components of MSAT are also available separately, as well as an (optional) course, to perform cyber security inspections on smartphones.
The work to prevent unwanted espionage
For these characteristics, the MSAT system responds to the growing need of many categories of people and professions, to quickly and in real time verify the cyber security status of their smartphones.
After recent news stories, such as the espionage against journalists and NGO activists carried out with the Trojan Graphite software by Paragon and, even before that, the hacker attacks on the Italian judicial system, which among other things forced some magistrates to stop using their smartphones, it appears increasingly evident that effective security and defense tools are now more necessary than ever, to defend oneself from malicious people.
“The MSAT system is cutting edge, and it is very effective because it detects the presence of compromises and spyware in cell phones in just a few minutes“, continues Camporesi.
Who needs to defend themselves from espionage
“We collaborate with law enforcement, the judicial system, investigative agencies and private companies, providing the best tools to carry out rapid and effective checks on their own, and verify whether or not their smartphones have been compromised. Customers who have already used them are satisfied with the results obtained, because these innovative defense systems have proven in the field to work perfectly“, continues the founder of Intercettazioni.biz.
“Ethics and legality are finally very important in our work, and we always choose carefully who to work with, because we do not want these tools to fall into the wrong hands“, concludes Luigi Camporesi.
