The treasure of Naples in Tokyo offered by a Japanese Neapolitan – By N. Yakova
In the bustling streets of Tokyo, Japan, lies a hidden gem that transports its visitors to the vibrant city of Naples, Italy. It’s called NAPD, short for Neapolitan Authentic Pizza & Dining? No, it’s NAPoli (Naples) Dicoprio! NAPD is more than just a pizzeria; it’s a magical place where the aroma of freshly fried pizza fills the air, and the warmth of Neapolitan hospitality envelops every guest.
Founded by Hikaru, a passionate 46-year-old with a deep love for Naples and its culinary delights, NAPD is a labor of love that reflects his admiration for Neapolitan culture. Born and raised in Tokyo, Hikaru’s fascination with Naples began at a young age, fueled by his admiration for legendary soccer player Diego Armando Maradona and his dreams of experiencing the vibrant energy of the city firsthand.
Hikaru’s dream became a reality four years ago when he returned to his hometown from Okinawa and opened NAPD on December 21st, coinciding with Naples’ birthday. Despite the restaurant’s incomplete state, Hikaru’s unwavering devotion to Naples compelled him to open its doors on this auspicious day.
NAPD’s menu is a celebration of traditional Neapolitan pizza fritta (fried pizza), featuring authentic dishes like pizza fritta completa (called Napoletana); montanara; pizza fritta sbagliata (with bresaola, ricotta cheese, tomato sauce, mozzarella di bufala bocconcini DOP, lemon peel, black pepper, gold dust); frittatine; crocchette; espresso; aperitif and more delicacies! What sets NAPD apart is its focus on Neapolitan pizza fritta, a delicacy rarely found outside of Naples. Using ingredients imported from Naples, Hikaru meticulously crafts each fried pizza with the same passion and authenticity found in the streets of Naples.
“When I was a child, I dreamed of being in Naples”, reminisces Hikaru, his eyes lighting up with nostalgia. And he contunues: “The warmth and openness of Neapolitans always captivated me. I wanted to bring a taste of that warmth to Tokyo.”
Indeed, NAPD has become a heaven for Neapolitans and Italians living in Tokyo, with nearly 80% of its customers hailing from Italy, a good sign that shows its authenticity. Situated just minutes away from the Italian embassy, NAPD has become a beloved destination for diplomats and expatriates seeking a taste of home.
Among NAPD’s most popular offerings is the Neapolitan pizza fritta, known for its rich flavors and hearty ingredients. Stuffed with ricotta, smoked provola, tomato, Napoli salami, basil, and black pepper, this savory delight has become a favorite among both locals and expats alike.
But beyond its mouthwatering cuisine, NAPD offers an experience that transcends borders and cultures. “Come to visit us at NAPD”! urges Hikaru with a smile. “Even if just for a moment, you’ll feel the true spirit of Naples – an open heart, a warm embrace, and a taste of genuine hospitality!”.
As diners step into NAPD, they are greeted not only by the aroma of sizzling pizza but also by the unmistakable sense of camaraderie and joy that permeates the space. Whether it’s for a quick coffee, a leisurely meal, or simply to soak in the atmosphere, NAPD welcomes all with open arms – just like the city of Naples itself.
NAPD’s charm lies not only in its delectable cuisine but also in its heartfelt hospitality. Inspired by the warmth of Neapolitan culture, founder Hikaru invites guests to experience a slice of Naples in Tokyo. From savory fried pizzas to friendly smiles, NAPD offers an unforgettable taste of Italian authenticity.
