Giuseppe Leone, one of the greatest photographers of the twentieth century passed away in Ragusa: he dedicated a book and an exhibition to the Journey to Campania
Sorrento – The Sicilian photographer Giuseppe Leone has passed away in Ragusa. He was one of the symbols of Sicily through photography. Friend and traveling companion of writers such as Leonardo Sciascia, Gesualdo Bufalino and Vincenzo Consolo, he has talked about beauty in dozens of publications, with the most important Italian publishing houses.
Among these also a volume dedicated to Campania, produced by the Premio Penisola Sorrentina (Sorrento Peninsula Prize) for a special artistic residency project (directed by its namesake Peppe Leone, a Samnite artist) which started from the Correale Museum of Sorrento and spread to Pompeii, Naples, Paestum, Salerno, Benevento , Buonhotel, Teggiano and Procida, in the year of the Italian capital of culture.
From the volume, published by Plumelia Edizioni with the patronage of the Campania Region, a small exhibition was also created, hosted in the archive rooms of the Banco di Napoli Foundation among landscapes, hidden places and famous monuments in the footsteps of the Grand Tour.
“Giuseppe Leone traveled around the world always carrying with him the camera and the Mediterranean lantern. In this human and artistic journey Campania also finds its voice through its immortal films“, commented the director of the Sorrento Peninsula Award Mario Esposito in memory of the Sicilian artist.
